Discussion Questions
1. The author ask the following question in chapter 2. Take a moment to discuss your answer.
Q) Do you have enough humility to be open to the possibility that you have been wrong in in your understanding of the Spirit?
Notice that the author isn't saying that you are wrong, and neither do we, but rather the focus of the question is your heart posture at the possibility of being wrong.
2. The author makes the following statement:
"One concern I've often heard (and felt) is, what if I pray for the Holy Spirit and nothing happens? What if I ask for more of the Spirit's fruit in my life and don't see any apparent "results"?
Have you ever had this concern about wanting more of the Holy Spirit?
3. Read Luke 11:13 out loud as a group. Do you believe that God in heaven gives his Spirit to those who ask? Discuss.
4. The author says: "The flip side of fearing that God won't show up is fearing that he actually will." Have you ever been scared that the God will actually answer your prayers and do what the bible says God will do?
5. Read 1 Thessalonians 5:16-22 out loud as a group:
16 Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not treat prophecies with contempt 21 but test them all; hold on to what is good, 22 reject every kind of evil.
What does the Apostle Paul mean when he says "Do no quench the Spirit"? What does he mean when he instructs us not to treat prophecies with contempt?
Have you ever quenched the spirit, or seen someone do so? Have you ever treated prophecies with contempt? How can we keep from making this mistake?
I am glad to read this wonderful article.
